Most modern looking house extensions with flat roofs and floor to ceiling full-width doors look incredibly expensive but in reality, the cost per square metre is substantially less than the cost of building a traditional style of extension.

Some homeowners look to save money by asking for 3 metre wide doors rather than 4/5 metres simply because they are worried about the cost of the doors. What they fail to consider is that in most cases it costs more to build walls than it does to install doors so don't be put off when your designer offers up 4/6 metre doorways with beautiful sliding or folding anthracite doors.

Another area where homeowners try to save money is the roof lights or roof lanterns. We generally recommend roof lanterns where possible rather than flat roof windows and the reason is simple, you get far more light whilst adding a more spacious and lighter extension. It's also fair to say that in 30 years I have never had a client that didn't like the roof lantern once it was installed.
